Magic Bookmark, explained: what it does, what it costs and who it is for
Checked 3 November 2026 against the US App Store listing and magicbookmark.com
Bottom line.Magic Bookmark is an iPhone app from Yomu Inc. that works next to the copy of a book you are already reading. You show it where you are, with a photo of the page, the page number or the last phrase you heard in an audiobook, and it gives you a recap, a cast list and answers that stop at that point. It is not a book tracker and it does not contain the books. You pay per book, the first one is free, and it only works for titles in its catalogue.
What is Magic Bookmark?
Magic Bookmark is a reading companion for the book you already have. The developer describes it as "spoiler-free" and its website line is "We spoil readers, never books." It does not sell or display the text of the book. Instead it keeps track of exactly where you are in a supported title and builds everything it shows you from the part you have already read.
That makes it a different kind of app from everything else we cover. Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover and the other trackers log what you read and when. Magic Bookmark keeps your place inside one book and helps you pick it back up. Many readers will use one of each.
How does Magic Bookmark know where you are?
You tell it, in one of three ways:
- Take a photo of the page you are on. The app matches the page and syncs to your exact place, "not just the chapter", in the listing's words.
- Type the page number.
- For an audiobook, enter the last phrase you heard.
Once it knows your place, every answer is limited to the story up to that point. Move on a few chapters and update your place, and the recap, cast list and answers move with you.
What do you get once your place is set?
Four things, all limited to what you have read:
| Feature | What it does | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Recap | A summary of the story so far | At your page |
| Cast list | Who's who and how they are connected; new characters appear only once you have met them | At your page |
| Questions | Ask about the story so far, for example "wait, are they together yet?" | At your page |
| Character chat | Type @ to summon a character, who answers in character | They only know the story up to your page |
The point of all four is the same: you can come back to a book after a week, a month or a long holiday and get your bearings without reading ahead or searching online, where spoilers for later books in a series are common.
Which formats does it work with?
Any format, as long as the title is supported. The website calls the idea BYOB, "bring, buy or borrow" your own book, and lists "hardcover, paperback, audio book, ebook or library loan." Its FAQ says it "works alongside the physical book you already own, any edition, any printing."
Audiobook support is the newest part. The App Store notes for version 1.1.1, released 27 October 2026, read: "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." Our news note on the audiobook update has the detail, and our guide to switching formats mid-book shows how it fits with a tracker.
Which books does Magic Bookmark support?
Supported titles only. The developer says it is "launching with the romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi, and historical fiction titles blowing up on BookTok" and Bookstagram, and "adding more every day." Titles shown on its website include Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm, A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, The Hunger Games, Mistborn, Dune, The Hobbit, Pride and Prejudice and The Song of Achilles, among others. If your book is missing you can request it in the app.
Check your book before you buy credits. The first book is free, so you can test the match on the title you are reading.
How much does Magic Bookmark cost?
The download is free and your first Bookmark Credit is free. One credit covers one book: the bookmark moves with you through that book, so you do not spend a credit per session. Credits never expire and there is no subscription.
| Pack | Price | Per book |
|---|---|---|
| 1 credit | $4.99 | $4.99 |
| 5 credits | $19.99 | $4.00 |
| 10 credits | $34.99 | $3.50 |
| 50 credits | $69.99 | $1.40 |
US App Store prices, checked 3 November 2026.
The credit math in practice: a reader who wants help with a five-book series pays $19.99 for a 5-pack, or uses the free credit on book one and buys four single credits for $19.96. A reader who gets through about one supported book a month spends $34.99 a year on a 10-pack, a bit under the $49.99 a year that StoryGraph Plus or Hardcover's Supporter tier costs (see what book tracker apps cost). Those trackers do a different job, so the comparison is about budget, not features.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone, with iOS 16.4 or later. The App Store listing also shows Macs with an Apple M1 chip or later, but the header says "Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS." There is no Android app yet; the website says Android is "on the roadmap for later". There is no web version.
How does Magic Bookmark rank on this site?
We rank nine reading apps on one question: which app gets you back into a print book, Kindle or other ebook, or audiobook after a break, without spoilers. Magic Bookmark scores 7.90 and ranks 2 of 9 there, behind BookBuddy. It scores highest on spoiler safety and getting back into the story, and lowest or near-lowest on price, logging and privacy. The full criteria and reasons are in our Magic Bookmark review and on How we rank. It is not scored as a tracker; trackers are compared on facts, with no scores.
Who is Magic Bookmark for?
It suits you if:
- you read long fantasy, romantasy, YA or sci-fi and lose track of the cast between sessions;
- you come back to series books months or years apart;
- you switch between a print copy and an audiobook of the same title;
- you read on paper or through a library and cannot use Kindle's built-in recaps;
- you would rather pay per book than subscribe.
It is not for you if:
- you want a reading log, goals, stats or a year-in-review: use a tracker such as The StoryGraph, Goodreads or Hardcover;
- your books are mostly outside its supported genres;
- you use Android or want a web version;
- you only read in Kindle ebooks bought from Amazon, where Kindle Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book are free with the book in the US;
- you read in a language other than English.
How does it compare with Kindle Recaps and a chatbot?
Kindle's Story So Far gives a spoiler-free recap up to where you stopped, and Ask this Book answers questions without spoilers, but only inside Kindle ebooks bought or borrowed through Amazon, in the US. Magic Bookmark works with a print copy, an audiobook or any ebook, but only for its supported titles and only on iPhone. Kindle's tools are free with the Kindle book; Magic Bookmark is pay-per-book.
A general chatbot does not know which page you are on. You have to tell it, and trust it not to mix in later events or invent details. That is how those tools work, not a test we ran. Our note on Kindle Recaps vs book trackers goes further.
What should you know about privacy?
The App Store privacy label lists identifiers as data used to track you. Data linked to you includes purchases, contact info, user content (photos), search history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics. If you photograph pages, those photos are user content. Our privacy labels note puts this next to the trackers' labels.
Who makes Magic Bookmark?
Yomu Inc., which also publishes YOMU - Family Reading Habits, an app aimed at family and children's reading routines. The US App Store version history for Magic Bookmark begins with version 1.0.1 on 20 August 2026; it has been updated regularly since, most recently with version 1.1.1 on 27 October 2026. See our version history note.
