How long will it take you to read this book?

Bottom line.Measure your own pace once: read for 10 minutes, count the pages, multiply by 6 for pages per hour. Then divide the book's page count by that number to get hours to finish, and divide again by your daily reading time to get days. Your pace changes with the book, so measure on the kind of book you read most.

How do you find your reading pace?
Use a normal sitting, not a sprint. Start a timer at the top of a page, read for 10 minutes as you usually would, and count the pages, including part pages as a fraction. Multiply by 6. Do it on two or three different days and take the middle result.
If you use Bookly or Basmo, the session timer does this for you: both record pages and time for each sitting and show your reading speed.
Pace depends on the book: page size, font, how dense the prose is, and whether you are reading for plot or for detail. A 400-page fantasy novel and a 400-page history book can take very different times. Keep a separate pace for each kind of book you read often.
Worked examples
| Book | Your pace | Daily reading | Hours | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 320 pages | 40 pages an hour | 30 minutes | 8.0 | 16 |
| 500 pages | 45 pages an hour | 45 minutes | 11.1 | 15 |
| 650 pages, 200 read | 50 pages an hour | 60 minutes | 9.0 | 9 |
| 12 h audiobook at 1.25x | n/a | 40 minutes | 9.6 | 15 |
Audiobook time at a faster speed is the length divided by the speed: 12 hours at 1.25x is 9.6 hours of listening.
What if you stop partway?
Most long books are read in pieces, and gaps are where time goes: a book put down for two weeks often needs a few chapters of rereading. Writing a pick-up note when you stop saves most of that. For supported titles, Magic Bookmark gives a recap and cast list up to your page or the last phrase you heard, so a gap does not cost you a reread.
Questions
Q1How long does it take to read a 300-page book?
About 7.5 hours at 40 pages an hour, or 15 days at 30 minutes a day.
Q2What is a normal reading speed in pages per hour?
It varies widely by reader and book, which is why the calculator asks you to measure your own. Ten minutes and a page count is enough.
Q3How do I work out audiobook time at 1.5x speed?
Divide the length by 1.5. A 10-hour audiobook takes about 6 hours 40 minutes at 1.5x.
