Bottom line.Reading apps keep spoilers out in four ways. The StoryGraph locks buddy-read comments until you reach the same point, Fable gives clubs spoiler-free discussion rooms, and Goodreads lets reviewers hide spoilers behind a tag if they choose to. Magic Bookmark covers reading alone: its recaps, cast list and answers stop at your page, for supported titles. Thus Far, a newer iPhone app, describes itself as a no-spoiler book club where you track and talk at your chapter.
Where do spoilers come from in a reading app?
Two places. Other readers, in reviews, comments and club threads. And the app itself, in anything it tells you about the book: blurbs, character lists, summaries and answers. Social features protect you from the first. Only a few apps are built for the second.
Which apps have spoiler-safe features?
| App | Feature | How it keeps spoilers out | Who it depends on | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The StoryGraph | Buddy reads (its listing also names readalongs) | You react to a specific part of the book, and comments stay locked for other participants until they reach that point in their reading. | Everyone updating their progress | thestorygraph.com; App Store |
| Fable | Spoiler-free discussion rooms | Clubs talk in rooms set up to avoid spoilers; Fable also lists milestones for its clubs. | The club keeping to its rooms | fable.co |
| Literal | Club sections by chapter | Discussion is split into spoiler-aware sections by chapter. Literal said in May 2026 that it is sunsetting the current version of Clubs; existing clubs still work. | The club | Literal; changelog |
| Goodreads | Spoiler tags in reviews | A reviewer can hide part of a review behind a spoiler tag. | The reviewer choosing to use it | Goodreads help |
| Thus Far: No-Spoiler Book Club | Chapter-based book club | Its App Store tagline is "Track & talk at your chapter." We have not reviewed it beyond its listing. | Not reviewed | App Store |
| Magic Bookmark | Page-locked recaps, cast list, questions and character chat | Everything the app tells you stops at the page you set, by photo, page number or, for audiobooks, the last phrase you heard. Characters only know the story up to your page. | The app, from your page | App Store |
We list what each app publishes. Not listed means we could not find it on the pages we checked, not that it can never exist.
What about spoilers when you read alone?
Clubs protect you from other readers. They do not help when you have been away from a book and need to know who someone is. Searching a character's name can land you on a fan page that covers the whole series.
Magic Bookmark is built for this case. You set your place, and its recap, cast list and answers stop there. It covers supported titles only, on iPhone, with one credit per book and the first free. Inside supported Kindle ebooks in the U.S., Amazon's Story So Far and Ask this Book do a similar job; see our page on Kindle Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book.
How is this different from our lesson on clubs and buddy reads?
Our Reading University lesson on book clubs, buddy reads and spoilers explains how clubs, groups and buddy reads work and how to run a club without spoiling anyone. This note looks only at the spoiler controls themselves, side by side, including tools for reading alone.
Spoiler safety is also one of the five criteria in our ranking of the best apps for getting back into a book without spoilers, with a weight of 30 out of 100. That page lists each app's spoiler safety score with its reason and source.
Which should you use?
- Reading with a friend or two: a StoryGraph buddy read, so comments appear as you reach them.
- Running a club: Fable's spoiler-free rooms, with a schedule everyone agrees on.
- Reading reviews: Goodreads, with care for books you have not finished, since tags are optional.
- Coming back to a book on your own: a recap that stops at your page, from Kindle for supported Kindle ebooks, or from Magic Bookmark for its supported titles in print, ebook or audio.
