How do you track a reread in a book tracker?

Best Book Tracker Apps editors · Data refreshed 3 November 2026 · Editorial assessment

Bottom line.Add a second set of read dates instead of changing the first. Goodreads' help page says that when you reread a book you add the dates you read it again, and Hardcover lets you add more read dates under Dates Read. Read dates decide which year a book counts toward, so a reread finished this year counts this year. Be aware that a Goodreads export keeps only the most recent finish date, so earlier reads do not travel with you when you switch apps.

Why log a reread separately?

  • Your history stays true: you can see you read a book in 2019 and again in 2026.
  • Your yearly totals stay right: the reread counts in the year you reread it, and the first read stays in its own year.
  • Your ratings can change. Some readers rate a book differently the second time and want both moments on record.

How do you log a reread on Goodreads?

  1. Make sure the book is on your Read shelf. Goodreads says a book must be on the Read shelf before you can add a read date.
  2. In the iOS app: open the book page, tap Add or edit dates read, then + Add dates read, and set the start and finished dates. In the Android app, tap Add or edit dates read and set Started and Finished.
  3. On desktop: open the book from My Books, click Edit my activity under the cover, and under Dates read click Add read date.
  4. Save. Each set of dates is kept as its own session, and you can delete a session later if you add one by mistake.

Goodreads' help page says read dates decide which books appear on your Year in Books and count toward your Reading Challenge, so a reread finished this year should count toward this year's challenge.

How do other trackers handle rereads?

Reread support published by trackers we cover, checked 29 October 2026
AppWhat we found
GoodreadsAdd another set of read dates for each reread, on iOS, Android or desktop.
HardcoverIts FAQ says you can add additional read dates with the Book Button, then Dates Read, and choose the edition for each read.
The StoryGraphIts feature list does not mention rereads, and we found no help page on them. Its import format includes a Read Count column, so it does record how many times you have read a book.
Other trackers we coverNo reread feature published on the pages we checked. A note in the book's entry or a reread tag works.

Not published means we could not find it on the pages we checked, not that it can never exist.

What happens to rereads when you export or switch apps?

This is the catch. Hardcover's FAQ explains that Goodreads exports include only the most recent finish date for each book, with no start dates and no earlier finished reads. So if you read a book three times on Goodreads and move to another app, only the latest finish date arrives. The Read Count column in the export, which The StoryGraph's import format also uses, records how many times, but not when.

Before you switch, write down the earlier dates of books you have reread, or keep them in a spreadsheet; our printable reading log uses the same columns as the export. After importing, add the earlier reads by hand: in Hardcover under Dates Read. The Goodreads export columns page lists everything the file does and does not carry.

What about rereading a series before the next book comes out?

Rereading the earlier books before a new release is one of the most common reasons to reread, and it is worth logging, because it can add several books to your year. If you want a refresher rather than a full reread, read your end-of-book notes in a series tracker, or use a recap: Kindle Recaps covers earlier books in supported Kindle series in the U.S., and Magic Bookmark recaps its supported titles up to the page you give it, in print, ebook or audiobook, on iPhone. Our guide to apps for reading a series compares the options.

Questions

Q1Can you mark a book as reread on Goodreads?

Yes. Open the book, choose Add or edit dates read (or Edit my activity on desktop) and add a new set of start and finish dates. The book must already be on your Read shelf.

Q2Do rereads count toward the Goodreads Reading Challenge?

Goodreads' help page says read dates decide which books count toward the challenge, so a reread with a finish date this year should count toward this year.

Q3Does the Goodreads export include my rereads?

Not their dates. Hardcover's FAQ says Goodreads exports carry only the most recent finish date for each book, with no earlier finished reads or start dates.

Q4Can StoryGraph track rereads?

Its feature list does not mention rereads and we found no help page on them, though its import format includes a Read Count column. Check your read history in the app before relying on it.
