When should you DNF a book?

Best Book Tracker Apps editors · Data refreshed 3 November 2026 · Editorial assessment

Bottom line.DNF a book when you have given it a fair try by a rule you set in advance and you would rather read something else, not when you are just busy. A common rule is librarian Nancy Pearl's Rule of 50: give a book 50 pages, and if you are over 50, subtract your age from 100. When you stop, mark it Did Not Finish the same day, log the page you reached and write one line on why. Goodreads, The StoryGraph and Hardcover all have a DNF status.

What does DNF mean, and is it OK to do?

DNF stands for did not finish: a book you started and decided to stop. It is a normal part of reading, common enough that Goodreads called a Did Not Finish shelf one of its most requested features when it added one in March 2026, after years of readers making their own custom DNF shelves.

Stopping a book you are not enjoying frees the time for one you will. The only real mistake is drifting: leaving a book in currently reading for months, neither reading it nor letting it go.

What rules do readers use to decide?

Common DNF rules and how they work
RuleHow it worksGood for
Rule of 50Librarian Nancy Pearl's rule: read 50 pages before deciding. If you are 51 or older, subtract your age from 100 and read that many pages instead.Readers who want a simple, fixed test.
Percentage ruleDecide at a set point, such as 20 or 25 percent of the book.Long books, where 50 pages is barely the opening.
Chapter ruleGive it a set number of chapters, such as three.Audiobooks and ebooks, where pages are vague.
Second-sitting ruleIf you dread picking it up twice in a row, stop.Readers who know their own signals.

Pick one rule and use it every time. A rule decided in advance takes the guilt out of the decision, which is the point.

Which questions tell you whether to stop or push on?

  1. Am I bored by the book, or just busy? If it is the week, not the book, pause instead of DNF.
  2. Is it the middle? Many books slow down in the middle. If you liked the start, try one more session.
  3. Am I lost rather than bored? Losing track of who is who is a reason to catch up, not to quit; see below.
  4. Would I miss it? If you would not wonder how it ends, let it go.
  5. Is there a book I would rather be reading right now? If yes, that is your answer.

What is the difference between pausing and DNF?

A pause means you plan to come back; readers sometimes call it a soft DNF. None of the trackers we cover publishes a separate status for it, so leave the book in currently reading with a page note, or mark it DNF and move it back when you return. Either way, write a pick-up note the day you stop: where you were, what had just happened, who matters and why you stopped.

If the trouble is that you have lost the thread rather than lost interest, a recap that stops at your page can save the book. In supported Kindle ebooks in the U.S., Story So Far recaps up to where you stopped. For print, ebook and audiobook copies of its supported titles, Magic Bookmark recaps up to the page or last phrase you give it, on iPhone, with the first book free. Our guide to restarting a DNF book covers the way back in.

How do you log a DNF in your tracker?

Did-not-finish support published by three trackers, checked 29 October 2026
AppHow DNF worksCounts toward your goal?
GoodreadsA Did Not Finish shelf, set the same way as Want to Read, Currently Reading and Read. Progress updates, rating and review stay with the book.Only if you add a read date in the current year.
The StoryGraphBuilt-in DNF, including tracking the pages you read. Not stated on the pages we checked; decide your own rule.
HardcoverOne of four statuses: want to read, currently reading, read and did not finish.Hardcover counts a book toward a goal once a finish date is saved.

Whatever the app, do three things the same day: change the status, log the last page as a progress update, and write one line on why. Our note on using a DNF shelf has a full routine.

What if it is a book club pick?

Tell the club early rather than going quiet. You can still join the discussion for the part you read, as long as you keep to that section's thread. Mark it DNF in your own tracker so your stats stay honest. Our book club reading schedule keeps each section's talk separate, which makes joining part-way easy.

Does DNF ruin your reading stats?

It makes them more accurate. With DNF as its own status, your finished total counts only books you finished, and your DNF list shows which genres, lengths or much-discussed books did not land for you. That is useful when choosing the next one. Our guide to reading stats shows how to work out your DNF rate.

Questions

Q1How many pages should you read before you DNF a book?

There is no single number. A common rule is Nancy Pearl's Rule of 50: give a book 50 pages, and if you are 51 or older, subtract your age from 100. Some readers use a percentage, such as 25 percent, for long books.

Q2Is it bad to DNF books?

No. Stopping a book you are not enjoying leaves time for one you will. Goodreads added a Did Not Finish shelf in March 2026 because readers asked for it.

Q3Does a DNF book count toward the Goodreads Reading Challenge?

Only if it has a read date in the current year. Goodreads' help page says books on the Did Not Finish shelf with a read date in the current year count toward the challenge.

Q4What is a soft DNF?

Reader slang for a book you have put down for now but may finish later. Trackers have no separate status for it, so leave it in currently reading with a page note, or mark it DNF and move it back when you return.
