How many pages a day do you need to read to hit your reading goal?
Best Book Tracker Apps editors · Data refreshed 3 November 2026 · Editorial assessment
Bottom line.Multiply your yearly book goal by the average length of the books you read, then divide by the days left in the year. That is your pages per day. Divide pages per day by your reading speed in pages per hour to get minutes per day. The calculator below does both, and works backwards from the time you have.
- Books left
- 24.0
- Days left in the year
- 365.0
- Books per month needed
- 2.0
- Pages per day
- 23.0
- Minutes per day
- 35
pages per day = (goal minus finished) x average pages / days left; minutes per day = pages per day / pace x 60.

How does the calculation work?
Three numbers decide everything: how many books, how long they are, and how fast you read. Your tracker can tell you the second and third: most show average book length and some, such as Bookly and Basmo, record pages per hour from timed sessions. If yours does not, use 300 to 400 pages for adult fiction as a starting assumption and correct it after a month.
Worked examples
| Goal | Average length | Days left | Pages per day | At 40 pages an hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 books a year, from 1 January | 350 pages | 365 | 11.5 | 18 minutes a day |
| 24 books a year, from 1 January | 350 pages | 365 | 23.0 | 35 minutes a day |
| 52 books a year, from 1 January | 300 pages | 365 | 42.7 | 65 minutes a day |
| 24 books, 15 finished on 1 September | 350 pages | 122 | 25.8 | 39 minutes a day |
| 50 books, 30 finished on 1 October | 400 pages | 92 | 87.0 | 131 minutes a day |
The last row is the point of the calculator: late in the year, a goal set in January can need several times the daily reading you started with. Lowering it is a better choice than abandoning it.
How do you set the goal in your tracker?
| App | Goal types | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Goodreads | Yearly Reading Challenge | Challenges, then set your number |
| The StoryGraph | Yearly and custom challenges | Challenges |
| Bookly | Daily, monthly, yearly | Goals; the timer feeds them |
| Basmo | Daily and yearly | Goals |
| Fable | Yearly free; weekly, monthly and multiple goals with Plus | Goals |
A minutes-per-day goal, from mode 2, is easier to keep than a book count. Our guide to reading goals explains why goals get abandoned and how to set one you will keep.
