Kindle Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book: what do they do, and how do they compare?

Best Book Tracker Apps editors · Data refreshed 3 November 2026 · Editorial assessment

Bottom line.Kindle Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book are Amazon features that help you get back into a Kindle ebook without spoilers. Recaps refreshes earlier books in a series, Story So Far recaps the current book up to where you stopped, and Ask this Book answers questions up to your reading position. They work for U.S. customers in thousands of best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks you bought or borrowed, not in print books or audiobooks, so we review them here but do not score them.

Amazon says all three cover thousands of best-selling English-language ebooks that U.S. customers have bought or borrowed. They come with the Kindle book; Amazon lists no separate charge.

Where do they work, and where do they not?

  • Country: the United States. Amazon describes all three features as available to U.S. customers.
  • Format: Kindle ebooks only, bought or borrowed. They do not reach a print book, an audiobook in another app, or an ebook from another store.
  • Devices: Recaps and Story So Far on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app; Ask this Book on the Kindle iOS app for now. Recaps also appear on series pages on Amazon.com and in the web browser.
  • Android: Amazon says Ask this Book will come to the Android app. Its article does not list Recaps or Story So Far for Android.
  • Titles: thousands of best-selling English-language ebooks, not every Kindle book. To check a book, press and hold it in your Kindle Library and look for the Read recap button.

How do you open them?

  1. Recaps: on a Kindle device, choose View Recaps from the three-dot menu on the series grouping. In the Kindle iOS app, press and hold the series grouping. On the web, look for View Recaps on the series page in your Kindle Library.
  2. Story So Far: press and hold a book in your Kindle Library and tap Read recap, or open the three-dot menu while you are reading.
  3. Ask this Book: in the Kindle iOS app, open the in-book menu or highlight a passage, then tap a suggested question or type your own. Amazon says answers stay up to your current position, but you can also choose to ask about the entire book, so check which you have picked before you ask.

How do they compare on our question?

Our one scored ranking asks which app gets you back into a print book, Kindle or other ebook, or audiobook after a break, without spoilers. Here is how Kindle's tools line up against its five criteria, in words rather than numbers.

That is why the Kindle app sits in a reviewed-not-scored box under our ranking. The features are useful, but they cover one format from one store, and our sources do not cover every criterion we score. The method is on How we rank.

Do Kindle Recaps replace a book tracker?

No. A tracker such as The StoryGraph, Goodreads or Hardcover keeps your books, dates, ratings and goals across every format. Kindle's tools help you remember the story inside one ebook. Many Kindle readers will want both: the recap to get back in, the tracker to log the book.

Some trackers can take in Kindle data, but as imports rather than a live link: Fable lists importing book lists from Kindle, and Basmo imports Kindle highlights. See automatic reading tracking and the unscored book tracker facts.

What have authors said about Ask this Book?

The Authors Guild has raised concerns that Ask this Book answers questions about authors' books without their or their publishers' permission and without a licensing arrangement. The Guild's statement reports Amazon's position that the feature builds on existing reading tools and that book content is not used to train its AI. We note the debate so you know it exists; it does not change how the feature works for readers.

Questions

Q1Is Kindle Story So Far available for paperbacks or audiobooks?

Q4Do Kindle Recaps cost extra?

Amazon lists no separate charge. Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book come with supported Kindle ebooks you bought or borrowed.
