The question

Which reading app gets you back into a print book or audiobook after a break, without running into spoilers?

The weights for this question are on How we rank. If you want a reading log, stats and goals, read the unscored tracker facts.

We scored nine reading apps on one question: after a break, which app gets you back into the print book or audiobook you are reading, without showing you anything past your place? Book trackers, for logging, stats, goals and clubs, are compared on their own page, with facts and no scores.

Our take

For getting back into a book without spoilers, Magic Bookmark ranks first at 7.90 out of 10, followed by BookBuddy at 7.65 and Bookly at 6.85. Magic Bookmark is not a tracker: it scores highest on spoiler safety and getting back into the story and lowest or near-lowest on price, logging and privacy. For a reading log with stats and goals, see our unscored tracker facts.

Magic Bookmark ranks 1 of 9 here, 0.25 ahead of BookBuddy. It has the lowest or tied lowest score on price and logging and the second-lowest on privacy.

Magic Bookmark does not log books, keep stats or run clubs, so it is not a tracker.

Amazon Kindle app (reviewed, not scored). Amazon says Story So Far gives spoiler-free refreshers up to where you stopped reading, and Ask this Book answers questions up to your current reading position. Both cover best-selling English-language Kindle ebooks you bought or borrowed, for U.S. customers on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app. They work inside Kindle ebooks only, not print books or audiobooks you own elsewhere, and our sources do not cover every criterion, so the Kindle app is listed without a score. Frequently asked questions

Why does this site lead with getting back into a book without spoilers?

Because that is the question many print and audiobook readers have after a break, and it is a different job from tracking. The lead ranking scores spoiler safety and getting back into the story at 30% each, logging speed and price at 15% each and privacy at 10%. Trackers are not scored against each other: the tracker facts page lists their platforms, prices, features and sourced facts with no numbers.

What is the best free book tracker app?

Literal is free and ad-free. Its social features are free for everyone, it states it shows no ads, and membership ($40 or $80 a year) is optional. Literal said in May 2026 that it is sunsetting the current version of Clubs; existing clubs still work in the meantime. The StoryGraph and Goodreads also have free core apps.

Is StoryGraph better than Goodreads?

It depends on the job. We do not score trackers against each other. The StoryGraph publishes deeper stats, a CSV export and a lighter privacy label; Goodreads has the bigger community and no paid tier. For getting back into a book without spoilers, StoryGraph scores 6.30 and Goodreads 5.35. See StoryGraph vs Goodreads.

Can I move my Goodreads history to another app?

Yes. StoryGraph, Literal, Hardcover, Fable, Bookly and BookBuddy all publish a way to import from Goodreads. Literal can read your public Goodreads profile directly; the others use the Goodreads library export file or an in-app sign-in. See the import and export table.

Which reading tracker is best for physical books?

It depends on the job. BookBuddy is best for cataloguing the copies you own, with loan and location tracking. Bookly's timer suits timed reading sessions. Magic Bookmark is the only app here that syncs to your exact page from a photo, which helps when you pick a book back up after a break.

Do book tracker apps track audiobooks?

Most let you add audiobooks as a format. Bookly logs audiobook sessions with its timer, and Magic Bookmark finds your place in an audiobook from the last phrase you heard.

Is Goodreads owned by Amazon?

Yes. Amazon announced its acquisition of Goodreads on March 28, 2013, and the site carries the line 'An Amazon Company'.

How were these apps scored?

From public app store listings, vendor websites and help pages, checked in September 2026. We did not test the apps hands-on or interview the companies. Each app gets a 0-10 score on five weighted criteria for getting back into a book without spoilers, and trackers are compared on facts with no scores; the full method is on How we rank.

Prices and features change. We re-check every listing each quarter; the next review is due December 2026.
