Where does each one win?

Goodreads: reach and price

Goodreads costs nothing and has no paid tier, so there is no feature you will be asked to upgrade for. Its size is the main reason people stay: most books already have ratings, reviews and lists. If you buy Kindle books, linking your Amazon account adds those purchases to your shelves and syncs your Kindle highlights in the US, Canada, India and Australia. The weak spots are spoilers, which are hidden only when the poster tags them, and the privacy label, which links ten categories of data to you. Goodreads is owned by Amazon; see is Goodreads free, and who owns it?.

The StoryGraph: stats and spoiler-safe buddy reads

The StoryGraph turns your log into charts of moods, pace, genres and page counts, and it imports a Goodreads export in one step (our move from Goodreads to StoryGraph guide walks through it). For people who read with friends, its readalongs are the standout: comments stay locked for each reader until they reach that point. It can sync reading progress from a Kobo e-reader. Plus costs $49.99 a year if you want the extra stats.

Fable: clubs first

Fable is built around clubs, including clubs for TV shows, with "spoiler-free chapter rooms" so members discuss one section at a time. It also sells ebooks you can read and annotate inside the app. It is the only one of the three whose App Store label lists data used to track you (identifiers), and we found no published way to export your library.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want one free app and never think about it again: Goodreads.
  • You care about your own reading data and charts: The StoryGraph.
  • You read with friends who are at different points in the book: The StoryGraph for buddy reads, Fable for larger clubs.
  • You want an easy way out later: Goodreads or The StoryGraph, which both document an export. Fable does not.
  • You use more than one: many readers keep Goodreads for discovery and log in The StoryGraph. Import your Goodreads CSV into StoryGraph, then update progress in one app only, or your counts will drift.

Can any of them recap a book you stopped reading?

No. All three store the page you stopped on but none recaps the story. If you come back to a book after weeks away, a recap tool tied to your place does that job: Kindle Story So Far for Kindle ebooks, or Magic Bookmark for a print, ebook or audiobook copy of a supported title on iPhone. Questions

Q1Is Fable better than Goodreads?

For book clubs, often yes: Fable's chapter rooms keep discussion in step with where members are. For finding reviews and a free app with no upsell, Goodreads is stronger. Fable also lists identifiers as data used to track you; Goodreads does not.

Q2Is StoryGraph better than Goodreads?

For stats and spoiler-safe buddy reads, yes. For the size of its community and its Amazon Kindle link, Goodreads is ahead. StoryGraph imports a Goodreads export, so you can try it without losing your history.

Q3Who owns Fable?

Fable's App Store seller is Fable Group Inc. Its Google Play listing names Scribd, Inc. as the developer, checked 4 November 2026.

Q4Who owns StoryGraph?

The App Store lists The StoryGraph Limited as the seller. Goodreads, by contrast, is owned by Amazon.

Q5Can I use Goodreads and StoryGraph at the same time?

Yes. Many readers keep Goodreads for reviews and log in StoryGraph. Import your Goodreads export into StoryGraph once, then update progress in one app so the two do not disagree.
