Magic Bookmark adds audiobook support: what changed, and did its score move?
A spoiler-free recap for the audiobook you paused a week ago, from the last phrase you heard. What it does, what it does not, and the arithmetic behind an unchanged score.

Bottom line.Magic Bookmark's US App Store release notes for version 1.1, on 21 October 2026, and again for version 1.1.1, on 27 October 2026, say: "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." You type the last phrase you heard, it finds that place in a supported title, and its recap, cast list, answers and character chat stop there. It is still not a book tracker, still iPhone only, and still one credit per book with the first free. Its score in our ranking stays 7.90, because both criteria this touches were already at 10.
What exactly changed, and when?
Three releases in eight days. Version 1.0.10, on 19 October 2026, added "a new flow for wrapping it up and moving on to your next read" when you finish a book. Version 1.1, on 21 October, carried the release note "Now with audiobook support: get spoiler-free recaps for any book format." Version 1.1.1, on 27 October, repeated that note word for word. All three are on the app's US App Store version history.
The App Store description already told audiobook listeners to "enter the last phrase you heard" to set their place, and our pages have described that since mid-October. What the release notes add is the developer's own statement that recaps now cover any format, print, ebook or audio.
How does an audiobook recap work?
- Pick the book in the app. It has to be one of Magic Bookmark's supported titles; you can request a missing one in the app.
- Instead of photographing a page, type the last phrase you remember hearing.
- The app syncs to that place, which it describes as your exact place, "not just the chapter".
- Read the recap, which stops at that point, and open the cast list to see who's who and how they are connected, built only from what you have heard so far.
- Ask a question about the story so far, or type @ to bring in a character, who answers in character and only knows the story up to your place.
Magic Bookmark does not play the audiobook. You keep listening in Audible, Libby, Spotify or wherever your copy lives, and use the app alongside it.
What does it still not do?
- It is not a tracker. It does not log the audiobook, count listening time or add the book to a yearly goal. Keep doing that in your tracker; see how to track audiobooks.
- It covers supported titles only. Its catalog launched with romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction titles popular on BookTok and Bookstagram, and grows as titles are added.
- It runs on iPhone (iOS 16.4 or later). Android is on its roadmap. The App Store also lists Macs with Apple M1 or later, but the header says Designed for iPhone and not verified for macOS.
- It is in English only.
- Its App Store privacy label lists identifiers under data used to track you.
What does it cost for an audiobook?
The same as any other format. The app is free to download and your first Bookmark Credit is free. One credit covers one book, however many times you come back to it, and credits never expire. After that: 1 credit for $4.99, 5 for $19.99 ($4.00 each), 10 for $34.99 ($3.50 each) or 50 for $69.99 ($1.40 each), on the US App Store checked 29 October 2026. There is no subscription.
If you switch formats partway through, listening on a commute and reading the paperback at night, the credit is per book, not per format.
Did Magic Bookmark's score change?
No, and here is the arithmetic. Our ranking for getting back into a book without spoilers scores five criteria. Audiobook support touches two of them: getting back into the story, where Magic Bookmark already scored 10 because its listing described finding your place from the last phrase you heard, and spoiler safety, where it already scored 10. Neither can go higher. Logging stays at 5, because the finish-a-book flow in 1.0.10 wraps a book up rather than keeping a reading log. Price (5) and privacy (4) did not change, since the credit prices and the privacy label are the same.
The total is each score times its weight, divided by 100: (10 x 30 + 10 x 30 + 5 x 15 + 4 x 10 + 5 x 15) / 100 = 7.90. BookBuddy still ranks first. The full method is on How we rank, and every app is re-checked at the quarterly review due in December 2026.
How does this compare with Kindle's recap tools?
Amazon's Story So Far and Ask this Book work inside supported Kindle ebooks for U.S. customers, on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app (Ask this Book on the iOS app for now). They come free with the Kindle book, but they are ebook features: they do not reach an Audible-only audiobook, a library audiobook or a paperback. Magic Bookmark covers those formats for its supported titles, on iPhone, and charges per book. Details are on our page about Kindle Recaps, Story So Far and Ask this Book.
For a wider look at place-keeping and recap tools across formats, smartbookmarkcompare.com covers that category on its own.
Who should care?
- Audiobook listeners who pause a long series for weeks and lose track of who is who.
- Readers who switch between a print copy and an audiobook of the same book.
- Book club members listening on audio who need to catch up to the club's chapter without hearing ahead; see book club apps without spoilers.
