Do book tracker apps recap the plot or protect you from spoilers?
Best Book Tracker Apps editors · 4 November 2026 · 3 min read · Facts checked 4 November 2026
Bottom line.No tracker in our study publishes a plot recap of the book you are reading. Trackers log what you read; recaps that stop at your place come from store apps (Kindle, Google Play Books, Spotify) and from companions such as Magic Bookmark. Where trackers do help is spoiler-safe discussion and getting your data out.
Summary of the full study: Recap and spoiler-safety features in 30 reading apps (November 2026)
Checked and refreshed 4 November 2026.
Which trackers did we check?
Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover, Fable, Literal, Bookly, Basmo, BookBuddy, Bookmory, Book Tracker, Readory and Slovo: 12 trackers, each read against its own US App Store listing and help pages on 4 November 2026. They sit inside a wider set of 30 reading apps that also includes Kindle, Google Play Books, Spotify, Audible, Libby and Magic Bookmark.
What does the data say?
- Plot recaps: 0 of the 12 trackers publish one. Basmo comes closest: its AI "Recap" turns "your notes on a book into a 2-minute listen", so it summarizes what you wrote, not the book. We coded it Partial.
- Spoiler controls in clubs: 3 of 12 gate discussion by reading progress. StoryGraph readalong comments "are locked for other participants until they reach that point in their reading"; Fable has "spoiler-free chapter rooms"; Readory club notes are "spoiler-safe" and open as members catch up. Goodreads relies on spoiler tags that people add by hand.
- Characters: Bookly is the only tracker with a character log, and you type the characters in yourself.
- Progress entry: Goodreads, StoryGraph, Fable and Bookmory take page or percentage updates; Bookly, Basmo, Book Tracker and Readory add a reading timer.
- Export: 6 of 12 trackers document a way out: Goodreads (CSV), StoryGraph (export page under Manage Account), Hardcover (JSON), BookBuddy (CSV, PDF, HTML), Bookmory (text, Markdown, Excel) and Book Tracker (PDF, CSV). We found no published export route for Fable, Literal, Bookly, Basmo, Readory or Slovo.
- Privacy labels: 6 of 12 list data used to track you (Fable, Bookly, Basmo, Bookmory, Readory, Slovo). Book Tracker is the only app of all 30 in the study whose label says "Data Not Collected".

What should series and DNF readers take from this?
If you pause a series or a DNF book and want to come back, a tracker tells you where you stopped but not what happened. For that you need a recap tool tied to your place: Kindle Story So Far for Kindle ebooks, Google Play Books "Catch me up" for Play ebooks, Spotify Recaps for Spotify audiobooks, or Magic Bookmark for a print, ebook or audio copy of a supported title on iPhone. Our guides to restarting a DNF book and catching up on a series show how to combine the two.
How do you pair a tracker with a recap tool?
Keep logging in the tracker you like, and open a recap tool only when you return after a break. Write the page you stopped on in your tracker's progress field; that number is what Kindle, Google and Magic Bookmark need to stop their recap in the right place. Magic Bookmark is pay per book, with the first credit free, so it suits the one or two books a year you actually lose the thread of.
What are the limits of this data?
"Not published" means the maker's listing and help pages do not describe a feature; an app may still have it. We checked US listings only, on one day. Ratings and versions change weekly. The full study lists every source and the exact text we relied on.
Questions
Q1Does StoryGraph have a spoiler-free recap?
No. StoryGraph locks readalong comments until each reader reaches that point, which protects you from other people's spoilers, but it does not summarize the book for you.
Q2Which book tracker has a character list?
Only Bookly, and you fill it in by hand as you meet characters. No tracker in our study generates a cast list. Magic Bookmark and Kindle X-Ray generate one, outside the tracker category.
Q3Which book trackers let you export your data?
Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover, BookBuddy, Bookmory and Book Tracker document an export. Fable, Literal, Bookly, Basmo, Readory and Slovo publish none that we could find.
Q4Does Goodreads hide spoilers?
Only when the person posting marks them. Goodreads reviews and posts use spoiler tags added by hand; nothing is hidden automatically based on how far you have read.
